Unlike a pavillion a pergola has an open air criss-cross beam structure for its roof.This provides shade while still letting in a touch of sunlight. Usually four to eight post, depending on the size, act as the support for the roof so that solid walls are not required therefore keeping with the non-intrusive feel.
